Motion M-37: Non-market housing
Every Canadian deserves to live in a safe, affordable home. But Canada is experiencing a severe housing affordability crisis, with an insufficient supply of non-market housing available to low- and moderate-income households. Non-market housing is an extremely important part of the solution to Canada's housing crisis; yet, only 3.4% of housing in Canada is non-market. Compare that to the Netherlands at 34% non-market housing; Denmark, 21%; Britain, 16%; and France, 17%. People in these countries do not experience the same level of housing instability that Canadians do.
That's why MP Gord Johns introduced Motion M-37. This motion calls on the government to redirect the GST from home sales into a new fund that would support the development of non-market housing, including co-operative, public, Indigenous, and community-owned housing. It also calls for this housing to be permanently affordable; no family should have to pay more than 30% of their gross income to put a roof over their heads.
