Bill C-256: Getting Rid of the "Gold Digger Clause"
Love found later in life should not mean losing survivor benefits to sexist laws.
Veterans dedicated their lives to serving Canada. Yet, an outdated clause penalizes the spouses of veterans who married after the age of 60 by completely stripping the spouses of any survivor's benefits.
This is in result of the gold digger clause, an inherently sexist policy of another era that never reflected the values of fairness and equality that Canadians expect today. Families who support those who served our country should not be punished simply for finding love later in life.
That is why MP Gord Johns introduced Bill C-256, An Act to amend certain Acts in relation to survivor pension benefits, to eliminate this discriminatory clause and ensure that spouses who support those who served Canada are not denied survivor benefits if they marry after age 60.
