Pharmacare for All
Because affordable access to important prescription medications should never depend on your postal code or having room on your credit card.
Every Canadian deserves access to the medications they need
No one should have to stand at a pharmacy counter wondering if they can afford the medication their doctor says they need.
No parent should have to choose between filling a child’s prescription and buying groceries. No senior should have to cut pills in half to make them last. No one should be forced to risk their health because the rent is due, the gas tank is empty or there simply isn’t enough money left at the end of the month.
After decades of promises and delay, New Democrats forced the federal government to pass Canada’s first Pharmacare Act in 2024. It was an historic breakthrough and the beginning of universal public pharmacare….but it was only the beginning.
The NDP governments in British Columbia and Manitoba have signed agreements to expand universal coverage for contraceptives, diabetes medication, and, in BC, menopausal hormone therapies. But millions of Canadians elsewhere are still waiting, not because their need is any less urgent, but simply because of where they live.
That is unfair, it is unequal and it is certainly not the Canada we should accept.
Access to essential medications should never depend on your income, your job or your postal code.
Together, we can finish what we started and deliver Pharmacare For All.
Two ways to participate
If you live in a province without a Pharmacare agreement...
Tell Canadians:
- What medication do you need?
- Have you ever skipped doses because of cost?
- Have you delayed filling a prescription?
- How has the cost affected your health or your family?
- Why should your province sign on to national pharmacare?
Your story could help someone else receive the medications they need.
If you live in British Columbia, Manitoba, Yukon, or for a limited time, in PEI where an agreement is in place but set to expire...
Tell Canadians:
- What has pharmacare meant for you or your family?
- Has it reduced financial stress?
- Has it helped you stay healthy?
- Why should every Canadian receive the same opportunity?
Your experience shows what's possible when governments put people first.

Quick Facts:
- Canada remains the only country with universal public health care that does not universally cover prescription medications.
- Canadians pay among the highest prescription drug prices in the world.
- Approximately one in four Canadians reports not taking medications as prescribed because of cost.
- Universal pharmacare is projected to save billions of dollars annually for families, employers, and the health care system.
- The first national Pharmacare Act became law in 2024 after the NDP made pharmacare a key condition of its agreement with the Liberal government
“Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister says he is committed to pharmacare, but today only three provinces and one territory are covered. That is about 17% of all Canadians. A commitment to pharmacare should mean access for Canadians no matter where they live. Right now, access to medicine depends on one's postal code. It is not nation building when we give only certain provinces and territories access to medicine."
