Motion M-8: Ban Plastic Waste Exports to Developing Countries

In 2018, my motion (M-151) for a national strategy to combat ocean plastics passed the House of Commons unanimously. While it did lead to Canada’s single-use plastics ban, there remains much work to be done.

Canada currently has not ratified key parts of the Basel Convention, an international agreement that bans the export of plastic wastes to developing countries. Worse, Canadian firms can run plastic wastes through the United States, which is not part of this agreement, to avoid the commitments Canada has already made.

That’s why I introduced Motion M-8. This motion calls on the government to stop the export of plastic wastes to developing countries, and for Canada to take a leading international role in engaging with the international community to reduce the production of harmful plastic items.
