In the last four years alone, volunteers consistently made up over 70% of Canada's firefighters. These champions are the backbone of emergency response in countless communities, putting their safety on the line to answer the call from those in need. With these demands comes personal costs in training, equipment, and lost wages from time away from work.
For the 2024 budget, I fought for an increase in tax credits for volunteers, leading to real progress with tax credits doubling from $3,000 to $6,000 for Canada’s volunteers in 2024. But we can do more with Bill C-204, An Act to amend the Income Tax Act (volunteer firefighting and search and rescue volunteer tax credit). I introduced this bill to improve relief and strengthen supports for these hard-working and dedicated volunteers.
The commitment and contributions of volunteer firefighters and search and rescue volunteers is courageous. Tax credits should reflect the incredible work they do.
